In March 2003 Brett Minnie and Dean Christie got together for a series of jam sessions. It wasn't the first time the two had
played together having attempted several musical combinations among their mutual friends. This time however the stripped down
combination clicked and The Medea Project was created. The name draws its inspiration from Greek Mythology and hints at the
band's progressive influences.
The recently formed partnership with Brett (bass/vocals) and Dean (guitars) thrashed out a couple songs together and then
started the search for additional members to complete the band. A drummer was found in the form of Matt Scott (a brother of one
of Brett's former band mates in another local band, Doctor Fox). Matt then introduced guitarist Greg Bedford to the band and the
first full line up of The Medea Project was complete.
The next several months were spent defining a sound characterised by Brett and Dean's dark, progressive influences and
Greg's fusion style. By July the band was ready to set foot on stage and began gigging the greater Durban area. Over the
course of the next seven months they went from strength to strength and managed two mini tours to the Free State including
competing in and winning the Surrender Hill Battle of the Bands. During this time a demo was cut at Catbun Studios and
featured two tracks written by the band and a third written by Brett with another of his former bands, Planet Caravan.
By this stage the band has garned a small cult following however musical differences caused Greg to the leave the band in
early February 2004. Matt followed shortly thereafter to leave with only the two original members. A search for replacements
began in earnest with various musicans being auditioned for both drums and guitar. No suitable replacements were found during
the following eighteen months (apart from a brief stint by Rudy Gravenstein on guitars). The break from gigging did give the
band some time to record several new songs.
At the end of June 2005 Dean decided to accept contract work in Ireland with the hope that Brett would be able to join at
a later stage and The Medea Project could be exposed to European audiences.
Circumstances intervened to put that plan on hold although the two maintained contact throughout the eighteen month period
and Brett even managed to release a single for a charity project (Durban Artists Againt Animal Abuse).
Towards the end of 2006 the band finally drafted long time friend Brad Tunnel (bass/acoustic guitars/keys) and Brett's sister Bianca (Drums)
into the band with Brett joining Dean (recently returned from Ireland) on guitars. The line-up recently recorded a song (again for Artists
Against Animal Abuse) and subsequently confirmed its first official gig in over three years at The Summoning II in late August. The band
also expanded to a five piece with an addition to the line-up in the form of long time friend of the band, Paul Cannell.
